File Document Assignment Act IV
Claudius: And so it shall be done. Laertes will murder Hamlet by means of a duel, and if all fails, Hamlet shall be poisoned.
Adviser: But sire, surely the life of the true king of the Danes need not be thrown away?
Claudius: I too am displeased with the drastic action I must take, but my ascendancy will not be hampered! Hamlet sealed his fate when he humiliated me for all of Denmark to see during the playing of the Mousetrap.
Adviser: The hurting of one’s feelings is hardly a reason to murder royalty!
Claudius: Are you so blind you cannot see through such a simple ploy? Hamlet has vividly proven that he knows I am responsible for the murder of his father! He cannot be trusted with this kind of information.
Adviser: And what of the Queen, his mother. Is she to discarded for the sake of your ascendancy?
Claudius: Alas, poor Gertrude, unwittingly a pawn in my own game, oh how it pains me to know that she shall be deprived of her last relative. But I could never kill Gertrude, as she is my love.
Adviser: So you shall be the one to put her through the collapse of her family?
Claudius: Sadly yes, but in final judgment, this will be my smallest infringement.
Adviser: Surely you could silence Hamlet with bribery?
Claudius: Perhaps, but I fear my tampering has been too great, his feelings, too strong.
Adviser: Then there must be no other way; Hamlet will die by the sword.
Claudius: And so it shall be done. Laertes will fell Hamlet by the end of the month.
